The Autumn Express

Life Column, Tom

I haven’t taken much time out to write to just write for myself.  To tell you the things that I have seen and done that have brought my world “to life.”  My job as a writer is to entertain those who enjoy reading and keep them coming back to see what is next on my list of quote unquote imaginative new worlds.

Today is different.

Autumn is unlike any other season I know.  The trees begin to shed their beautiful leaves, but the warm feeling of the holidays begins to grow inside of me.  The smell of the air is different.  Like the smell of cut grass and exhaust or maybe it’s old leaves and the cool air.  I have talked with many people and it seems we can’t seem to agree.

The first cold night always catches us all off guard and we get to finally snuggle up next to that special someone or wrap ourselves deep within our blankets.  The wood stoves turn on and the smell of the wood fire fills the air.  There really isn’t anything quite like the smell of the first fire of the season.  The leaves all around us begin to change into the most beautiful of colors that can only be found in the crayola crayon box.  The hills in the distance become paintings that you expect to be taken away at any moment.  But they don’t, they are there to stay.  We marvel at their beauty and thank the higher power for giving us such a beautiful place to live.

The past could days I have spent time walking through the hills of The Adirondacks surrounding Big Moose lake.  It truly is God’s country.  The air is pure.  The forest is silent.  Only a few sounds birds or the occasional animal scurrying about.  The sound of cars and the hustle and bustle of life doesn’t exist here either.  Sure the town has a year round population of 500 people.  Where have I ended up?  What happened to the real world?  Big Moose has reminded me that peace of mind does exist.  That the “average American day off” truly does exist.  The cool air here only further reminds me of the autumn.  Finally being able to button up that coat all the way and keep myself warm is one of my favorite things to do.

And then…

This will all be gone in an instant.  The leaves will be gone and the cool air will turn to cold and the snow will begin to fall.  It is the autumn that I always remember.  From when I was in high school to college to now.  The end of one period and the beginning of the next.  The Autumn Express has never ceased to amaze me in the new paths it has always shown me.
