Staring out of the window of the coffee shop I could see the street lined with cars. Business men walked back and forth sporting their brand new suits and talking about the deals they had closed on the previous day. The sun was high in the sky, but the streets remained quiet. The day read like a tale out of a old western. As if a tumble weed would blow by the saloon and suddenly the day would begin. The buildings were quiet and there was a breeze through the concrete that made them.
A group of three people turned the corner and made their way down the sidewalk. Then three more and four more until the streets were full of people seeking out their favorite destination. Men, women, and children started moving across the sidewalk like they were on rails, in and out of their favorite stores and restaurants. The town had become like the annual carnival. Children hopped along side their parents in joy of what they’d see next. Parents carried souvenirs from an assortment different vendors they had just visited.
As quickly as they came, they were gone. The streets emptied out and the business men returned to their offices. The streets were left to the barren wastelands that they had started out to be early that morning. The owner of the restaurant across the street stepped out onto the sidewalk and took a breath of fresh air on the first nice day of spring. A couple came upon his doorstep. He greeted the couple and held the door for them. Closing the door behind them he looked up and down the street and smiled in complete content.
