Day 8,719.
When you put it like that it really puts life in perspective. Where will I be 365 days from now? Well 365 days ago I couldn’t have told you that I would be where I am now with any amount of certainty.
I woke up this morning and it was my day off. My body still ached from sunday’s batting practice. A clear indication that I could get myself back on a tredmill or running around the block a few times a week. My job holds many responsibilities and requires me to be on call constantly. I don’t mind it. This is the life I chose, because it is hard for me to sit still. I needed to return to work today quickly to complete a task. Unfortunately, that became a 50 minute ordeal, but ultimately was a help to everyone. Later on that day I received an email from my boss regarding the status of an employee. I was going to need to fill in the position. Of course at the height of my enjoyment of my day off, I’m called into action. Nothing is more frustrating.
The long and short of the story is the employee showed up two hours late and I was able to go home. I realized the importance of helping those in need. In the end they will help you. Maybe not the first, second or 90th time, but eventually. Those of us in the restaurant business understand, or at least should understand, that leading by example is the only way to be successful with your other employees. Making an example of yourself and showing how the work should be done and how leaders are made.
When I returned home I was able to take a breath and reflect on a day accomplishment. Tomorrow will be my 8,720 day on this planet and it will not be wasted.
