Ponder This!
Last April, I wrote about, “What Makes An Artist?” So I pose the question once more for everyone. You can check out this links from Creative Accidents.
I only thought it appropriate to add my two sense. We are all artists. With all that is different in the world, it is hard to imagine how people would view all the things we cherish so dearly. This brings up the whole, “One mans garbage is another man’s treasure.” We all have so many different events that occur in our lifetime. Learning how do deal with all of them is a lesson we must all learn on our own. These events give us reason to have our treasures or our junk.
But to find beauty in the ordinary is so
mething very rare now-a-days. With such a material world that surrounds us each day many people find it hard to appreciate the small things in life. An example that comes to mind is the movie American Beauty. The outcast of the movie films a bag floating in the wind calling it “beautiful.” Honestly, I couldn’t agree more. Watching a bag caught in a whirlwind is one of the most hypnotizing sights. Watching it float up and down and around captivates me every time. I also found myself at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) a few years ago looking at a Mark Rothko painting. To the average person the painting appears multiple blocks of color with no meaning. But I look at them and see a genius. The use of positive and negative space and the complementary nature of colors to create mood within someone whether it be positive or negative. Equally as fascinating would be Jackson Pollock. For those who don’t know, his paintings consist of lines of paint created by flicking a brush at the canvas.
“Well I could do that.” is the first thing someone says when they see these artists’ work. My response to them every time is, “Well, you didn’t do it did you?” Those creations are unique to the artist themselves. Their height, weight, arm length, etc., all factored into creating that work of art. Any small variation of them would create a completely different image.
What makes you an artist? I’d have to say it’s your own ability to manifest your own version of reality. We are all artists in our own respect.
